Hebrews
4:11-16. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that none
may fall through such disobedience as theirs.
My first thought was that the writer of Hebrews was
talking about what we must do on the Sabbath (what we call Sunday) Then I
thought ‘oh dear, we are in deep trouble, because other than going to church,
we do not keep the Sabbath. When I was young (back in the dark ages) nearly
everything was closed on Sundays. Now it is just another day of the week for
most people.
Then I read the passage again Now it seemed to me
that the writer is speaking of Sabbath as the time when we go to our heavenly
rest. The Sabbath that is a perfect rest—-not sleep—but a joyous living that we
cannot know here on earth.
If we do, indeed, make every effort to enter God’s
rest, it should be much more than a Lenten discipline. As followers of Jesus
Christ, it is truly necessary to have a day devoted to worshipping our Lord and
resting in His love. That is not to say that the other days of our week we are
not aware of our need of God’s love and care. It is simply to say that we need
to be recharged in our faith as a battery needs to be recharged so that we can
continue to radiate God’s Love to the people we encounter in our lives. We
cannot do this on our own , but must rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us and
direct us and strengthen us on our way.
My Lenten prayer is that we will all be strengthened
and radiate God’s Love and finally all come to rejoice in the heavenly Sabbath.
