Jeremiah
5:20-31. Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but do not
see, who have ears, but do not hear….what will you do when the end comes?
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a “jeremiad” is a
doleful complaint. The prophet, Jeremiah, from whom the term comes, indeed does
complain on and on and on about the wicked, treacherous, unjust, stubborn,
rebellious scoundrels and fowlers who have turned away from God. Yet, Jeremiah
has a softer side. He’s also known as the weeping prophet; he mournfully
laments Jerusalem’s decline. When Jeremiah calls out to his people, is he
scolding or pleading? Punishing or prodding? Repudiating or reaching out? Or…
all of the above? In the end, Jeremiah was a true friend who helped his people
bear their defeat with dignity and courage and showed them the path that would
lead to healing and restoration.
Oh Lord, Help me to deeply see and hear in this
moment. Help me to move from complaining to showing compassion. Amen.
