Exodus
3:1-15. When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him
out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’
Buzzing alarm clocks! Ringing phones! Chiming emails!
Meeting requests! Complicated Projects! Expanding lists! Whizzing cars! Honking
horns!
With the fast pace of life today, do you ever feel
like all you can manage is to keep your head down and put one foot in front of
the other?
Lent is a time to stop - take a breath - and look for
signs of God’s grace and love all around us, just as Moses did many years ago.
While Moses didn’t have any of the gadgets we have
today to distract him as a shepherd, he certainly had plenty to keep him busy
tending his flock many years ago (predators, a chatting father-in-law...).
Moses knew that God was speaking to him, and needed his full attention, when he
saw the burning bush:
Then
Moses said, ‘I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the
bush is not burned up.’
God is asking us to keep an eye out for “signs” in
our daily life that remind us that God is with us and will give us strength to
reach beyond our comfort zones and meet challenges.
When the Lord told Moses he was the one to lead the
Israelites to freedom, Moses questioned the Lord, as he felt inadequate for
such a large task. But the Lord said:
‘I will
be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when
you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this
mountain.’
When we see “signs” in our daily life, God is
reassuring us that we have many gifts and He will be with us along the way.
During this Lenten season: take a breath, listen to
the person on the other side of the phone, visit with a friend who is hurting,
or stop and help a coworker who is struggling with a project. God is with us.
Moses stopped tending his sheep to investigate the
burning bush and listen to God’s voice. This Lent, will you and I do the same?
