Psalm
136. Give Thanks to the Lord for He is good, His steadfast love endures
forever.
Most Monday mornings I have the
privilege of meeting other parishioners in the Chapel as we silently join
together in Centering Prayer. Following a brief reading of scripture or poetry
we quiet our minds and open our hearts to God’s grace and presence. During our
twenty minutes of spiritual stillness we meditate on a scared symbol or word.
In Psalm 136 the phrase, “His love
endures forever” is repeated twenty-six times. The repetition and rhythm of
this mantra is a beautiful part of the psalm. Other versions have translated
the refrain to read “His mercy endures forever” or “His loving kindness is
everlasting.” The psalmist writes of God’s miraculous love in creating the
earth, sky, sun, moon and stars. In his faithfulness, “with his strong hand and
outstretched arm, God rescues and delivers His people. In his mercy, He
remembers us when we are discouraged and in His providential love he offers
protection and provides for our every need.
This Lent I’ll be thanking God over,
and over, and over again for His continuing blessings, seeking His love and grace
in my life each day, in the context of eternity.
